Defender's Day Activity
Many Russians view February 23 as a male day, as most men in Russia must perform military service. Women often give gifts and postcards to their male relatives, including those who have never served in the military. On the business day before and after the holidays, many women also congratulate their male colleagues and boys on the possibility of receiving a small present from their lesbian classmates.
Russian authorities may hold local marches that day in honor of soldiers and veterans. The growing presence of women serving in the army today poses a challenge to the traditional masculinity of this festival.
